The Payoff
Fifteen years ago I started
Molehill Mountain Equipment, Inc., a company dedicated to making products that enable, encourage and enhance outdoor active lifestyles for families. My wife Deb and I had just had our first child, Jenna, when we began shipping our first
fleece line of Polartec clothing. You could get 4 styles in solid colors only in sizes 3/9 months through 3T.
Since then, we have added Noah (now 13) and many additional product lines. Having my own business has allowed me the freedom to get outdoors with my kids (under the auspices of product testing) as well as relocating from the Colorado wonderland to an even more unbelievable Northern Idaho. Through all of this we have maintained the belief that families are stronger and kids experience positive development when we spend time outdoors together. Many times we were left to wonder if our choices worked and our beliefs were correct as the kids chose time with friends, movies, or video games over a hike with the parents.
This summer though has offered a number of outdoor activities and brief glimpses of why we went through all we did. A Memorial Day camping trip with hikes and floats on the Yaak River in Northern Montana reminded us all what fun nature can be and left us with the great taste of s’mores in our mouths. Five days of hiking and fishing in the Beartooth Mountains of Montana yielded additional time to hang out together and practice some of the outdoor skills we have developed over the past 15 years.

Noah and I have been feeding our fly fishing passion with streams in Montana, Idaho, and Canada this year. Catching bull trout on the Skookumchuck River in British Columbia was so much fun that we spent an additonal unplanned night in the tent together. I love the unscheduled nature of our outdoor pursuits.

If you are a parent who has invested a great deal of time and effort in getting outdoors with your kids, keep the faith. They will develop an appreciation of nature. They will enjoy spending time with you someday. And they will imbed this love in another generation after you are way too old to enjoy sleeping on the ground.
